INVESTMENT PROSPECTS OF EDGE COMPUTING IN VIETNAM 2026
In recent times, Vietnam’s aggressive enforcement against copyright infringement on nationwide - heightened international scrutiny following the USTR Special 301 Report, has led to the penal and shutdown of many unauthorized film, gameshow and music streaming platforms. This event has created a market structural shift in online entertainment: Millions of consumers are transitioning from illegal sites to paid subscription entertainment services.
So, where is the connection between the above story and our industry?
Simplify imagine: When a viewer watches a movie or livestream football match, data transfer speed and bandwidth quality are 02 core criterias. Buffering, lag, and poor picture quality will make paying users leave immediately. It's genuinely not easy to claim more money from consumers even when the Government has your back to do it. More demand for users is synonymous with high expected quality. So, streaming platform owners must be careful in choosing methods and infrastructure to store their data.
Surprisingly! Not large hyper scaler data centers with hundred million can solve this problem with optimal cost. The rising star should be mentioned here is Edge Computing. In short, "Edge" means placing servers physically close to users, instead of relying on one big data center far away. Advantages form this technology trends including:
- Faster response, fewer drop-offs: shorter data travel means lower latency, which for streaming translates directly into less buffering and faster stream starts.
- More efficient bandwidth use: processing content locally reduces strain on backbone networks, critical for anything latency-sensitive like live video, gaming, or IoT feeds.
- Grow as you go: Edge sites can be added one region at a time, so operators expand capacity without a single massive upfront build.
- Redundancy built in: spreading infrastructure across locations gives natural backup if one site has an issue, keeping a live stream or broadcast online.
- Lower long-term CAPEX — the right regional footprint cuts reliance on constantly expanding core network capacity.
From an economic perspective, Edge Computing data centers seem like an attractive option for new investors in the new market entry process. They don't “burn” a lot of money, and projects will be approved easily by the regulator. Example: Ho Chi Minh City now requires a minimum investment of about USD 100 million per hectare for hyperscale data center land at Saigon Hi-Tech Park. Recent approved projects there range from USD 250 million to USD 2 billion. However, no matter how large these central data center projects may be, they will not be able to operate at full capacity or fill their tenant space without the support of edge data centers — together forming a network capable of serving multiple industries.
Overview, Edge Computing DC has a lot of potential to lead the infrastructure investment trend in Vietnam in the coming years. But before jumping in the game, having a capable local partner - someone who can bridge the gap with provincial authorities, translate technical requirements into terms the local board understands, and pre-check candidate sites for power and connectivity is a required condition.
